What is a Cabochon?

A cabochon is a gemstone which has been shaped and polished as opposed to faceted. A cabochon has a convex top with a flat bottom. Usually, cutting en cabochon in an ellipse or dome applies to opaque gems to show its star or eye, while faceting applies to transparent stones.¬†¬†Round cabochons on some watches’ crowns are the exception.
